There are two concepts to grasp when working with navigation menus in WordPress, the first part in the actual menu itself, the second part is menu locations.
Once you have a menu created you then need to tell WordPress where you like it displayed on your website.
About Menu locations
Most WordPress themes define locations where you can add navigation menus. Some themes come with just one or two locations you can use, others might have more. Common locations are across the top of the website, just above the actual content, down the side and right at the bottom. It’s down to you whether you use all, some or none of the menu locations.
Managing Menu Locations
Hover over the Appearance menu option in the left-hand navigation menu and in the fly-out menu, click the Menus link. Alternatively, click the Appearance menu option and then click the Menus link underneath.
Along the top of the menu pages you’ll see two tabs, Edit Menus and Manage Locations, click on Manage Locations.
You should now see a list of Theme Locations and a dropdown showing which menu is assigned to that Location.
Use the dropdown to select a different menu, clicking the button afterwards.
You’ll also see some links to Edit a menu (if one is assigned), or Use new menu – which will create a new menu, assign it to that Location and open the menu ready for editing.
