It had been a number of years since I updated PHL Groups’ website, so when Clare contacted me about overhauling the look of their website it made sense to move them over to the Genesis theme framework and create a new child theme so they could take full advantage of WordPress’s new Gutenberg editor.

Working from supplied layout ideas I designed the new child theme. A large portion of my time was spent creating custom style options for some of the blocks used in the new Gutenberg editor – doing this makes editing the website a lot more visual and intuitive.

The new website is also a lot more accessible than the previous one. I’ve always tried to make things as simple and easy to use as possible, but for this project I spent more time exploring accessibility. Using screen readers and navigating websites without using your eyes really is very enlightening.
