Adding a Simple Product in WooCommerce

In the left hand admin menu click on Products then Add product. Alternatively hover over Products and click Add product on the flyout menu that appears.

Under Add new product Fill in the product name and the product description under this. Text entered here is usually displayed under the main product image on the Description tab.

Product Data Panel

Scroll down to the Product Data Panel, and from the dropdown select Simple product.

Next to this you’ll see two checkboxes: Virtual and Downloadable.

Virtual Products

Virtual: ticking this means the product isn’t a physical product – so the Shipping panel isn’t displayed as the Product isn’t shipped like physical Products.

Downloadable Products

Downloadable: ticking this adds options to the General panel.
Click on the Add File, a new line will then show, give your file a name File name then click the Choose file button. The Media window will now open; if you’ve already uploaded your file then select it from the Media Library. Alternatively, click on the Upload Files tab and drag and drop your file from your computer, or click the Select Files button and locate the file on your computer. Once uploaded select the file and click on the Insert file URL button.
You can also set a Download Limit Unlimited and/or whether the Download expires, for e.g. you may want to restrict users from re-downloading after x days from their purchase date.

General Panel

With the General panel selected fill in your Products price and if you want to set a Sale price you can do this now. If you set a Sale price but don’t set a Schedule the Sale price is used immediately.

If you’ve set your store to charge tax you’ll see additional options for setting the Tax status None and assigning a Tax class Standard to your product.

You can check your tax setting by visting WooCommerce > Settings > Tax.

Inventory Panel

The Inventory deals with stock control.

Set a SKU (Stock Keeping Unit / Stock Code) if necessary to help keep track of your stock.

Stock Status Use the dropdown to select whether the product is In or Out of Stock.

The Sold individually checked means a customer can only buy one of these products per order.

Additional options will show if you’ve set Enable stock management in the global Inventory settings. You’ll find the global Inventory settings in WooCommerce > Settings > Products > Inventory

Tick the checkbox Manage Stock? and you can set the following:

  • Stock Quantity enter your starting stock quantity
  • Allow back-orders controls whether customers can purchase out of stock items
  • Allow back-orders

Shipping Panel

The Shipping panel is visible unless you’ve set your product as a Virtual product.

Enter the weight and dimensions of your product and set a Shipping class if you’re using these.

Linked Products Panel

The Linked Products panel contains two options:

Up-Sells

Any products you list here will be displayed on the product page, usually under the main product description with the heading You may also like… This is generally used this to offer alternative products.

Cross-Sells

Any products you list here will be displayed on the cart/basket page if the customer has this product in their cart. Typically these would be complementary products. For example, if you are selling a mobile phone, a cross-sell might be a protective case.

Start typing the name of your product in the box, then select it from the list when it appears.

Attributes Panel

Advanced Panel

The Advanced panel allow you to leave a Purchase note (that will be included in the email to customers).

Menu order e.g. this controls the priority of the product when listed on a Grouped product page.

Enable reviews allow customer to leave reviews of products.

Product short description

Text entered here is usually displayed to the right of your main product image.

Publish

The Publish box for products adds a few more options to the standard settings:
Catalog visibility: Visible by default, you can also adjust the product to just appear on the Catalogue pages (shop page, category pages etc.), or Search (the product won’t be displayed – but will appear search results), or Hidden.

Your can also set whether the product is a Featured product which, dependent on your theme, is used to highlight the product certain ways.

Product categories

If you’ve already set up some categories you’ll see them listed here, there are two little tabs, All categories and Most used Tick whatever category or categories your product belongs in, or if you’re missing one click the + Add new category link, type the name of your category and set a parent category if this is a child (sub) category then click the Add new category button.

Product tags

If you’re using Product tags to organise products you can add them here.

Product image

Click the Set product image and the media window will open.

  • Locate the Product image meta box (usually on the right hand side of the screen)
  • Click on the link Set product image
  • Click to choose an image from the Media Library or upload a new image on the Upload File tab, if uploading a new image either drag and drop your images from your computer or click the Select Files to choose images from your computer
  • Next click the Set product image button

The media window will now close and you’ll see you image in the Product image box.

Product gallery

To add a gallery of images:

  • Locate the Product gallery meta box (usually on the right hand side of the screen)
  • Click on the link Add product gallery images
  • Click to choose an image from the Media Library or upload a new image on the Upload File tab, if uploading a new image either drag and drop your images from your computer or click the Select Files to choose images from your computer
  • Select multiple image (hold down the CTRL key on windows or Command key on Mac) whilst clicking
  • Next click the Add to gallery button

The media window will now close and you’ll see your images in the Product gallery box.

Drag and drop them into your preferred order, or hover one and click the small delete link top-right to remove.
